Wipro Boosts AI Investments, Targets Innovation Through Gen AI Startups

Jun 14, 2024

Wipro is ramping up its investments in artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI (Gen AI) startups, viewing the startup ecosystem as a nucleus of innovation. Chief Technology Officer Subha Tatavarti revealed in an interview with Moneycontrol that the company is intensifying efforts to identify promising startups, recognizing them as vital sources of groundbreaking technologies.

The company’s proactive stance includes tailored bootcamps aimed at nurturing early-stage startups, facilitating their growth, and harnessing their innovations to enhance Wipro’s solutions for its clients. While the exact investment figures remain undisclosed, Wipro’s commitment to advancing its AI capabilities was underscored by the launch of its AI-first ecosystem, Wipro ai360, in July 2023, with a substantial $1 billion earmarked for the next three years.

Amidst challenges in growth over recent years, Wipro’s pivot towards the startup ecosystem signifies a strategic move to tap into greater innovation opportunities. Tatavarti emphasized Wipro’s comprehensive approach to AI investments, spanning from chip design to the application of large language models (LLMs), with a primary focus on scalability for both Wipro and its startup partners.

Collaborations with industry giants like NVIDIA and disruptive startups are aimed at addressing cost and efficiency hurdles associated with high-compute workloads, particularly in data science and AI. Wipro’s investment strategy encompasses every layer of the technology stack, from chip and system design to middleware and AI application deployment.

Tatavarti highlighted Wipro’s endeavors to democratize AI technologies by exploring ways to reduce costs, including research into running LLMs on more affordable systems rather than relying solely on costly GPU setups. This initiative aligns with the industry trend towards making Gen AI more accessible, particularly amid concerns regarding cloud pricing and compute costs.

As Wipro navigates the evolving landscape of AI innovation, its collaborations with startups and strategic investments underscore a commitment to driving technological advancements and propelling the company’s growth trajectory in the AI-driven future.
