The fascinating Origin Story Behind Google’s Name

Jun 15, 2024

The origin of Google’s iconic name have been traced back to a playful twist of fate involving a mathematical term and a childhood creation.

Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the visionary minds behind Google, initially named their search engine “BackRub,” based on its use of backlinks for ranking websites. However, they decided to rebrand for broader appeal.

The pivotal moment came when they run across the term “Googol,” coined in 1920 by a young Milton Sirotta, inspired by a mathematical challenge posed by his uncle, Edward Kasner. A “googol” represents the number 1 followed by 100 zeros, a whimsical creation that captured the imagination of mathematicians worldwide.

In a twist of fate, while checking the availability of the domain name “Googol,” Larry Page inadvertently typed “Google.” Recognizing the resonance and playful charm of this unintended variation, Page and Brin swiftly adopted it as the name for their burgeoning search engine.

The term “Googol” itself is speculated to have its roots in the comic strip “Barney Google and Snuffy Smith,” which debuted in 1919, possibly influencing young Sirotta’s creative invention. This comic strip, renowned for its whimsy, likely inspired the term “Google” as well, further intertwining the playful origins of both the search engine and its name.
