New U.S. Visa Updates for International Students

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced significant changes to visa regulations that will impact international students and skilled workers seeking to study and work in the United States.

Key Changes to Visa Applications

Tighter Scrutiny for F, M, and J Visas
The USCIS is implementing enhanced scrutiny for F, M, and J visa applicants. This new measure aims to improve data accuracy and streamline the visa appointment scheduling process. Applicants will be required to provide precise passport information when booking appointments, helping to minimize scheduling errors and ensure a smoother experience.

Extended Validity for Employment Authorization Documents (EADs)
In a positive development for international students, the USCIS has relaxed eligibility criteria for Employment Authorization Documents. EADs will now be valid for up to five years, providing greater stability for those seeking work authorization in the U.S.

Adjustments in Practical Training

Updates for OPT and STEM OPT Students
International students participating in Optional Practical Training (OPT) and Curricular Practical Training (CPT) will benefit from several key adjustments:

  • The 24-month STEM OPT extension remains unchanged.
  • Reporting intervals for STEM OPT students will now occur annually instead of every six months, reducing the administrative burden.
  • Employers are no longer required to participate in E-Verify for STEM OPT extensions, making the process simpler.
  • The unemployment allowance for OPT and STEM OPT students has been increased from 150 to 180 days, offering more flexibility during job searches.

Fee Increases for H-1B and Green Card Applications

New Fee Structure
The registration fee for H-1B visas has increased to $215, while Green Card applicants will see a rise in Form I-130 fees to $675. The USCIS states these changes are part of ongoing efforts to enhance their services and ensure a smoother application process for all.
