Elon Musk Commends Indian-Origin Engineer for Key Role in Tesla’s Autopilot Advancements

Jun 10, 2024

In a recent social media post, Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk publicly acknowledged the pivotal contributions of Ashok Elluswamy, an Indian-origin engineer, to the development of Tesla’s Autopilot technology.

Elluswamy, the first engineer hired for Tesla’s Autopilot team, took to social media platform X to share insights into the early days of the Autopilot project in 2014. He recounted the challenges faced, including the constraint of extremely limited computing resources, with only 384 KB of memory at their disposal. Despite initial skepticism within the team regarding Musk’s ambitious goals for Autopilot, including lane-keeping, lane-changing, and vehicle control, Musk’s unwavering determination inspired them to overcome obstacles and achieve milestones.

By 2016, Tesla made the strategic decision to develop all computer vision capabilities for Autopilot in-house, a feat typically taking other companies over a decade to accomplish. Remarkably, the Tesla team completed this task within just eleven months, underscoring their dedication and Musk’s visionary leadership.

Musk, upon discovering Elluswamy’s post, expressed his gratitude and admiration, crediting him and the AI/Autopilot team for their invaluable contributions. He emphasized the significance of their work, stating, “Without him and our awesome team, we would just be another car company looking for an autonomous supplier that doesn’t exist.”

Elluswamy’s acknowledgment by Musk highlights the collaborative spirit and innovation driving Tesla’s advancements in autonomous vehicle technology, positioning the company at the forefront of the industry’s evolution.
