Apple Set to Establish Fourth iPhone Assembly Unit in India with Tata Electronics

Apple Inc. is gearing up to launch its fourth iPhone assembly unit in India, with Tata Electronics leading the project. The new factory, located in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, is expected to commence production in November, according to a report by Business Standard.

This facility will be Tata Electronics’ second iPhone assembly plant, following its acquisition of Wistron’s unit in Karnataka. Preparations are in full swing to begin iPhone production at the 250-acre Hosur site, where Tata had previously set up a components unit three years ago.

Tata Electronics is projected to invest ₹6,000 crore in the assembly plant, mirroring its investment in the existing components unit. These developments are anticipated to create over 50,000 jobs, with the assembly unit alone employing 35,000-40,000 workers, primarily women, making it India’s largest iPhone production facility.

Apple’s move aligns with its strategy to diversify its supply chain beyond China amid escalating geopolitical tensions between China and the US. The tech giant’s Indian manufacturing partners now include Tata, Pegatron, and Foxconn, with Tata playing a crucial role in Apple’s expanding footprint in the country.

Analysts predict that India will contribute 20-25% to Apple’s total iPhone shipments this year, up from 12-14% in the previous year. Apple, which began production in India just four years ago, aims to shift 10% of its global iPhone manufacturing capacity to the country by 2025-26, leveraging the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme.
