Rise in International Applications to US Universities Continues: IIE Survey

A recent survey by the Institute for International Education (IIE) shows that international student applications to US universities and colleges are continuing to rise, though the growth rate has slightly slowed. The Spring 2024 Snapshot Survey, which gathered data from 662 US institutions, reveals that 53% of universities reported an increase in applications for the 2024/25 academic year, compared to 61% last year. Growth was strongest at associate’s and master’s colleges, while doctoral institutions saw a decline.

Surge in Applications from West Africa and South Asia

The survey highlights a significant surge in applications from West Africa and South Asia. Ghana led with a 62% increase, followed by Nepal (53%), India (47%), Nigeria (46%), Bangladesh (40%), Vietnam (38%), and Pakistan (37%). Although applications from China also increased, the growth was slower at 26%. However, visa refusal rates, especially in Nigeria and Ghana, could impact final enrollment figures.

US Institutions Strengthen International Recruitment Efforts

US universities are maintaining strong financial support for international recruitment, with 85% reporting stable or increased budgets. India and Vietnam remain key markets for undergraduate recruitment, while China, despite sending the largest number of students, ranks fifth in recruitment priorities. At the graduate level, India, China, Vietnam, Nigeria, and South Korea are top targets.

In-person recruitment events, international partnerships, and alumni networks are key strategies, highlighting the continued importance of adapting to emerging markets.
