Lenovo Expands Investment in India with New AI Server Manufacturing and R&D Lab

Lenovo announced on Tuesday the launch of AI server manufacturing at its Puducherry plant and the inauguration of a cutting-edge Research & Development (R&D) lab in Bengaluru. These developments mark a major step in aligning with India’s ‘Made in India’ and ‘AI for All’ initiatives.

Lenovo’s Puducherry facility will now produce advanced AI and GPU servers tailored for high-demand AI workloads. With a production capacity of 50,000 AI servers and 2,400 high-end GPU units annually, the plant aims to meet both domestic and international demand. Over 60% of the servers produced will be exported to the Asia-Pacific region, strengthening Lenovo’s global supply chain for AI solutions.

Amar Babu, President of Lenovo Asia Pacific, emphasized the significance of these initiatives, stating, “This is a big step toward achieving Lenovo’s and India’s ‘AI for All’ vision. We are committed to expanding India’s role in global tech innovation and manufacturing.”

Complementing the manufacturing expansion, Lenovo has unveiled a new R&D lab in Bengaluru. This facility will focus on the development and testing of next-generation server technologies, including hardware, firmware, and software. The lab will play a crucial role in Lenovo’s global R&D network, which includes facilities in the US, China, and Taiwan.

Shailendra Katyal, Managing Director of Lenovo India, highlighted the long-term nature of the company’s investment, noting, “Our investment in AI server manufacturing and R&D in India is long-term. This new lab demonstrates our commitment to producing cutting-edge technologies ‘in India for the world.'”

Lenovo has a longstanding presence in India, having manufactured technology products in the country since 2005. Last year alone, the company produced over seven million devices. The new AI initiatives underscore Lenovo’s deepening investment in India and its ambition to position the country as a pivotal player in global technology and AI.

Amit Luthra, Managing Director of Lenovo ISG India, added, “These investments will help us deliver top-tier AI infrastructure and solutions for our customers, while also enhancing India’s status as an innovation hub.”

As Lenovo continues to expand its footprint in India, these advancements are expected to significantly contribute to the country’s technological growth and innovation on the global stage.
